
Most websites are designed around an idealised user: sharp vision, fast attention, confident with technology, and no physical limitations. That user exists, but this is not the whole picture, and they will not stay that way forever.
A large and growing share of the global population is over 50. In many developed markets, that group already controls the majority of consumer spending. And yet, the majority of digital products are still built as if ageing is someone else's problem.
What changes as we age
Ageing affects how people interact with digital interfaces in ways that are predictable, well-documented and often ignored in the design process.
Vision changes naturally over time. The ability to focus on small text decreases, contrast sensitivity weakens – particularly on mobile screens in varying light – and distinguishing between similar colours becomes harder. A font size that looks fine to a 30-year-old developer on a calibrated monitor can be genuinely difficult to read for someone using a phone in daylight at 60.
Motor precision also declines. Tap targets that feel obvious with steady hands become frustrating with reduced dexterity. Small buttons placed close together, hover-dependent interactions and time-limited UI elements all create friction that compounds with age.
Cognitive load matters too. Reading speed and the ability to hold multiple pieces of information in working memory tend to decrease over time. Dense layouts, unclear navigation and interfaces that require users to remember context from a previous step all become harder to use; not because users are less capable, but because the design is not doing enough of the work.
Accessibility needs are more common than you think
There is a tendency to frame accessibility as a concern for a defined group: people with permanent, documented disabilities. That framing understates the actual scope considerably.
Consider temporary and situational impairments. A broken wrist, bright glare on a screen, a moving train, end-of-day fatigue; these affect every user at some point. The design decisions that make a product usable under these conditions are the same ones that make it usable for someone with a permanent motor or visual impairment. The population of people who benefit from accessible design is far larger than the population that would self-identify as disabled.
Many older users also adopt assistive tools without describing themselves as users of assistive technology. They increase the default text size in their browser settings. They use the zoom function on their phone. They rely on voice input. They don’t frame these as workarounds, it’s just how they use their device. A product that breaks under these conditions is failing users without them ever knowing why.
What this means in practice
The good news is that designing for older users and designing for accessibility are largely the same work. Most of the changes that make an interface more usable as someone ages – larger text, sufficient contrast, clear focus indicators, simple navigation, generous tap targets – are also WCAG success criteria. Doing one well means doing the other.
Practically, this means: default font sizes should not require adjustment to be comfortable. Interactive elements need enough size and spacing to be used reliably without precise tapping. Contrast ratios should meet WCAG 2.1 AA as a floor, not a ceiling. Error messages need to be clear and placed where users will actually see them. And nothing critical should depend on hover states, timing or motion that a user cannot control.
None of this requires a dedicated 'senior-friendly' design mode or a separate version of the product. It requires building the standard version well.
The business case is straightforward
Users over 50 are not a niche. They’re one of the most commercially significant demographics in most markets, with higher average disposable income and strong brand loyalty when a product works well for them. They are also increasingly the decision-makers for purchases that affect younger family members.
An interface that is difficult to use does not prompt users to ask for help or report a bug. It prompts them to leave and find an alternative. That exit is usually silent and it rarely shows up clearly in analytics. The attribution problem makes it easy to underestimate how much friction is costing you.
Conclusion
Ageing is not an edge case. It’s the natural direction every user is heading, and a significant portion of your audience is already there.
Designing for that reality is not a compromise or an added constraint. Rather, it tends to produce cleaner, clearer, more considered interfaces that work better for everyone. The overlap between accessible design and good design is not a coincidence. It reflects the same underlying principle: the best interfaces do not assume anything about the user that they do not have to.
Your website will serve people across a wide range of ages, abilities and circumstances. Building it to handle that range is not a special effort. It is just building it properly.
